Hartmut Zabel received his Ph.D. from the University of Munich in 1978 on the topic of Hydrogen in Metals. He then spent a postdoctoral year at the University of Houston, and joined the faculty of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1979, where he was promoted to Professor of Physics in 1986. Since 1989 he holds the Chair of Experimental Physics at the Ruhr-University of Bochum, Germany. His main research interests are in thin film physics, including hydrogen in metals, magnetism, and superconductivity.
