Associate Professor, Dr. Leonid I. Smirnov works in the field of theory of hydrogen diffusion in metals. He proposed (in collaboration with Prof. V.A. Goltsov) the over-barrier states and multiple over-jumps models (1975-1980), developed the diffusion theory in multicomponent ordered alloys (1982), predicted (with V.A. Goltsov) the nonlinear and nondiagonal diffusion in metals and interstitial alloys (1985-1988), derived the concentration dependence of the hydrogen diffusion coefficient (1989), predicted the wave propagation of hydrogen concentration disturbances (1990) and a possibility of the oscillatory regime during a hydride phase transformation (1998). Effect of H-H interaction and hydrogen strain on hydride transformations has been investigated by him (1996).

Dr. Leonid I. Smirnov contributed significantly to a new scientific direction - theory of hydrogen elasticity phenomena. He has derived a generalized kinetic equation suitable to describe highly inhomogeneous systems from which it follows that instead of monoperiodic modulated Cahn's structure at rather low temperatures there are formed structures with multiple wave vectors observed in the experiments.
