Dr. Valentin I. Svachko is Senior Scientist of the E.O.Paton Electric Welding Institute. At the beginning of his scientific activities in the Kharkov Physical and Technical Institute he had dealt with the bases and initial development of a new physical method to study surface processes which were developed later in many laboratories of the world, and which is well-known now as one of the main up-to-date analytical methods, called the SIMS method.

Now, the problem of his interest is hydrogen brittleness of steels and weldments. He has proposed a new method and criteria of determining degree of hydrogen embrittlement, has experimentally established a state of hydrogen atoms on a metal surface as negative ions, has developed a new model of hydrogen effect which reveals the physical nature of a reversible hydrogen brittleness and cold cracking of weldments.
