Professor Pleg N. Senkov is an internationally recognized expert in novel metallic materials including nanocrystalline titanium and aluminum alloys, intermetallics and composites. From 1975 to 1996 he served at the Institute of Solid State Physics, Russian Academy of Sciences and since 1996 he has been working at the University of Idaho. Since 1988 Professor Senkov has been studying fundamental principles of the effect of hydrogen as a temporary alloying element on the microstructure and workability of titanium and its alloys. He has discovered and comprehensively studied such phenomena as a transformation-induced increase in plasticity of hydrogenated alloys (in cooperation with Professor E.G. Ponyatovsky and Dr. I.O.Bashkin), hydrogen-induced softening of alpha-titanium and hydrogen-induced hardening of beta-titanium (in cooperation with Professor J.J. Jonas). In cooperation with Professor F.H. Froes, he has employed hydrogen as a temporary alloying element in the mechanical alloying process to produce amorphous or nanocrystalline powders. Professor Senkov has over 120 technical publications and 5 patents.
