Professor Pokhodnya I. K. is Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NASU). He is Head of Arc Welding Metallurgy Department of the E.O. Paton Welding Institute and Chairman of the Materials Science Department of NASU. He is a founder of the world-wide known scientific school in the field of arc welding metallurgy.

His name is associated with the fundamental studies of a lot of the most important problems of arc welding: arc discharge physics; electrode metal melting and transfer; crystallisation of welds; behaviour of gases in welded joints; forming of pores, cracks and non-metallic inclusions; structure transformation in weld metal and HAZ; hydrogen embrittlement of structural steels and cold cracking of welded joints; physical and computer simulation of welding processes.
