History
In the May of 2001 DonNTU will see his 80th anniversary. Our school is the first higher education establishment in the Donbass region and one of the first schools of this rank in the Ukraine.
The history of DonSTU could be divided into several stages.
- 1921-1926 Donetsk Mining College
- 1926-1935 Donetsk Mining Institute
- 1935-1960 Donetsk Industrial Institute
- 1960-1993 Donetsk Polytechnic Institute
- since 1993 Donetsk State Technical University
The first in the Donbass Region higher education establishment's coming into being took place under the extremely unfavourable conditions. The mines, metallurgical, machine-building and coke plants were inactive; railways were destroyed. The new government considered the Donbass Region restoration to be a very important task. For this the engineers were of great demand. There were only 189 mining engineers in the Donbass that time. There was a need in highly qualified staff for mining industry. Taking into account all this the decision to establish the college in Hughesovka was taken. The colleges of 20-s were higher education establishments in the Ukraine. They train specialists in narrow field of specialization. The institutes trained the company leaders and administrators. According to the instruction of the city authorities the new education establishment - Donetsk College - was located in the building of the former Commercial School (at present the 2nd building) and adjoined to it tumbledown Cossacks' barracks. They were repaired for a short period. Donetsk College opening ceremony took place on May 30, 1921. The first enrollment of students made up 208 persons. The staff was a problem. Engineers from industrial companies were invited to teach special disciplines. Professors from Kharkov, Ekaterinoslav, Novocherkassk and other cities taught at the college since 1923.

As the students' knowledge on general subjects was poor the college administration established the workers' school (rabfak). It was one of the first rabfaks in the Ukraine where students studied general subjects for three years. The future USSR' leader Nikita Khrushchev studied at the rabfak. It was Donetsk College that gave start to his political career.
The students' working day made up 9 hours: six hours of theoretical studies and three hours at the college construction area. The students built a stock-hole, electric and mechanical plant, installed central heating, and water supply system for a short period. In December 1921 the hostel for 100 students was opened; a canteen, laundry, bathhouse and hairdresser's were at service. To mark the college staff excellent work the Central Executive Committee of the Ukraine awarded the college with the official document and the Red Banner.
In accordance with the training programmes the students not only attended lectures, but worked at blacksmith, casting, metal, and turning shops called the Donetsk College mechanical plant.

Besides teaching the Donetsk College teachers carried research work.
By 1926 the College had made great progress in training experts. It was the Donbass Region science and engineering ideas centre. The high pace of the Donbass Region industrialization required for considerably great number of specialists. In the April of 1926 the Donetsk Mining College was reorganized into Donetsk Mining Institute.
DMI had two faculties: Mining ( V.I. Belov as the Dean) and Mining and Mechanical (D. A. Lototsky as the Dean). Coal and Chemical Faculty ( A. I. Tulparov as the Dean) was established later . Besides, the Part -time Metallurgical College, Engineering Classes, and Rabfak were operating.
At the end of 1929 the Part-time Metallurgical College was reorganized into Donetsk Metallurgical Institute (DMI) which trained specialists in domain, furnace and rolled metal manufacturing.
Donetsk Coal and Chemical Institute (DCCI) was established on the basis of Coal and Chemical Faculty in the summer of 1930. it was developing very quickly. There appeared coal chemistry, physics and coking laboratories. A lot of famous scientists worked there. Among them were Prof. V. S. Krym who studied the coal chemistry, Prof. I. E. Korobchansky who developed the project of Stalino gasifying etc.

By 1935 more than 1.5 thousand specialists had been trained by Mining, Metallurgical, and Coal and Chemical Institutes. They became the engineering staff of coal, chemical, and metallurgical plants of the country. However, the life demanded for the establishment of one big engineering higher education school in the Donbass Region where it could be possible to have strong theoretical and engineering departments to train specialists with maximum benefit. In the April of 1935 Donetsk Mining, Metallurgical, and Coal and Chemical Institutes were united in Donetsk Industrial Institute (DDI).
It did good for the logistics and laboratories. The Institute had 4 buildings, 5 dwelling houses for the staff, and 4 big hostels. The laboratories were extended and equipped with new installations. The staff of the institute became larger too. 200 academics (15 professors and 54 associate professors) worked at the Institute. Nevertheless, the school needed teachers. They were trained at post-graduated courses. 11 post-graduated students defeated their dissertations and took the degree of Candidate of Science in 1935-1941. The Institute's research work improved.Various research works were carried out at the Institute.
A.Prof. L. D. Bailin and his group studied the methods of coal and gas emission prevention;
Prof. S.S. Gerchikov and his team developed the methods of steep gradient coal seams mining;
Investigation of parallel work of fans under the mines ventilation carried out by the team led by Prof. V.S. Pak was of great theoretical and practical importance for the Donbass Region deep and gas bearing mines.
Prof. I. E. Korobchansky and his team developed the project of coal underground gasifying. It initiated the birth of new branch of industry- coal underground gasifying- which did not have any analogues in the world.

During the pre-war period the students and the staff's life and rest were paid much attention at. There were a canteen, shops, refreshment rooms, and the clinic on the territory of the students' campus. In summer a lot of the staff members spent their holidays at the Black Sea where there was the Institute's rest home.
By 1941 the Institute had turned to be a large academic and research centre. DII trained about 4300 thousand engineers for the years of its existence. Good logistics was created and highly qualified staff taught.
|
Donetsk Industrial Institute was rewarded with the Order of the Red Banner of Labour in the May of 1941.In this way the country pointed the school's contribution into the process of training experts for coal mining and other branches of industry. A big group of academics was also rewarded with orders and medals.
Further plans on the Institute's development were destroyed by Great Patriotic War. It broke out in the depth of the exams and the diploma projects defense. Many of the final year students, graduates, teachers, and the staff became the Red Army volunteers. In the August of 1941 nearly all first year students were mobilized. On the eve of the occupation of the city by the fascists in the October of 1941 a part of the Institute's equipment, teachers, and students managed to be evacuated to the Prokopyevsk town in the Urals Region. A building and the training equipment were given to the Institute there. The classes started in the February of 1942. They hardly reminded the previous ones as were carried out in the classrooms of a little use. The electricity was often turned off. The war period students first graduation took place in the March of 1942. Only 6 people got the engineer diplomas. However, the Institute was operating. That was very important.

More than 400 students were trained in DII in the town of Prokopyevsk in the new academic year of 1942/1943. The researchers conducted investigations related to the front's demands. The news on the Donbass Region liberation was taken with great pleasure. A group of teachers was sent from Prokopyevsk to Stalino ( Donetsk was called like that since 1924) to examine the situation in the Institute in the autumn of 1943. On arrival to the Donbass Region the teachers saw awful things which were the war effect. The damage done to the school made up 66 million roubles. 13 buildings and dwelling houses were burnt and blown up, the laboratories, classrooms, and the library were robbed. Prof. N. A. Nikolsky and the Mathematics Department's Head Prof. S. F. Lebedev were shot. More than 100 teachers of the Institute were burnt down alive. Many teachers and students were lost at the war fronts. The grateful succession built the monument in the memory of them at the third building of the Institute.

When the Donbass Region was liberated its economics started to be restored. The Institute was being restored together with the restoration of the industrial enterprises. The teachers and students worked at the buildings and hostels reconstruction for practically 24 hours. Due to their selfless work 678 students of the first and second years of study renewed their studying on the 5th of December 1943. The students not only studied but went on repairing classrooms, the library, and the canteen. In the October of 1944 the Institute's personnel came back from Prokopyevsk to Stalino. 4 faculties of DII (Mining, Mining and Mechanical, Metallurgical, Coal and Chemical) started operating.

Despite the difficulties of the restoration period the research work was carried out actively at the Institute. The staff worked at the most important problems related to the restoration of the destroyed industrial potential of the Region. The central laboratory on water exhaust from the Donbass mines was established at DII. Prof. V. S. Pack, the head of the Department of Mining Mechanics headed it. However, the main task of DII was to train a great number of technicians-and-engineers. The state of the Institute itself was rather difficult. 3 out of 5 pre-war buildings were functioning at the beginning of 1946: the second building, 70% and 40% of the active area of the first and third buildings correspondingly. Many qualifications did not have laboratories because of the lack of training area. However, the number of students of the academic year of 1947-1948reached the pre-war figures. They were trained on 14 qualifications at 5 faculties: Mining, Mining and Mechanical, Exploration, Metallurgical, Chemical and Technological. To train specialists quickly the three years of study engineering courses were organized at DII.
By 1951 DII had been completely restored. The DII Rector Prof. K.S. Borisenko made a great contribution into the process.

The school extended gradually. The Part-time Department was renovated. The Industrial and Civil Construction Faculty was established. The Extra-mural Department has functioned since 1953. That year the DII branch in Kramatorsk was set up. The Part-time Department was organized in Makeevka in 1955. The DII branches were established in Gorlovka and Tores at the beginning of 1960. The school turned to be polytechnic by its nature. On March 19, 1960 it was reorganized into Donetsk Polytechnic Institute. 8355 students were trained in 18 specialities there that time. More than 100 citizens of China, Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria graduated from the Institute in 1952-1960.

The logistics of the Institute strengthened considerably in 1960-1990. The Rectors M. A.Bogomolov (1952-1968), G. V. Maleyev (1968-1989), and A.A. Minayev (1990 up to now) made great contribution to it. The modern buildings of the Mechanical Engineering Faculty, Chemical and Technological Faculty, and Mining Faculty, Power Engineering Faculty were constructed. At the beginning of the 90-s the Institute occupied 9 buildings with the training area of 200thousand square metres. They housed 120 special classrooms, more than 300 training labs and classrooms, 2 TV centres, computer centre, and the library with the book stock of more than 1.5 mln books. The research work was paid much attention at. The DPI researchers published 60 monographs and 20 textbooks.
Three science schools recognized not only in the country but also abroad were set at DPI.
One of them was headed by Prof. V. G. Geyer . He created a new science trend The Mineral Products Hydrotransport Systems Automation on which 11 doctorate and 70 candidate dissertations were defeated.
The team headed by Prof. V. M. Klimenko developed the rolling new technological process which was patented 19 times and on which 3 licenses were sold.
The leading professors of the Department of Mining Machines Y. I. Alshyts, G. V. Maleyev, G. V. Gulyayev developed the theoretical basics of mining machines working processes the implementation of which provided the improvement of their technical level.
By the beginning of the 90-s DPI had turned up to be the largest higher education school in the Ukraine. More than 1400 academics worked here. Among them there were 122 professors, Doctors of Science, about 700 associate professors, Candidates of Science. 10 Honoured High School Teachers of the Ukraine (M. P. Zborshchick, G. V. Maleyev, V. N. Matsenko) and leading researchers who were Honoured Scientists of the Ukraine (V. G. Geyer, V. M. Klimenko, K. F. Sapitsky, N. G. Logvinov, A. A. Minayev and others) trained students. In 1993 DPI was certified and due to the decision of the Ministry of Education of the Ukraine obtained the status of state technical university.
Donetsk national technical university is a qualitatively new step in the school's development history.
